NEVER GIVE UP

On New Years Eve, I took myself out for Chinese food and did a bit of writing and reflecting on 2013, thinking about dreams and goals for the year ahead.  After dinner, the fortune cookie arrived (the best part) and it read: Genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration.  Great, I thought.  Couldn't this fortune be a little bit more fun?

Nope, it was just a good old-fashioned reminder that there are no short-cuts in life, and good things come when we commit and "buckle down" as they say back home in Texas.  As my stepmom Vivian says all the time (one of her "Vivianisms"), All you got to do is just get up every day and ring that bell.  I didn't like hearing that as a teenager, but now in my early thirties, I see it in a new light.  I take it to mean, it's time to roll up my sleeves, get focused, and to stay steady. But above all and most importantly, to never give up.

With that being said, sometimes the ego (Edging God Out) and Fear (False Evidence Appearing Real) sneaks in and says, Wait a minute who do you think you are? Or you can't do this, you must be crazy! Or fill in the blank... Any number of thought concoctions fear and ego serve up for thedrama de jour.  I used to think having an ego meant being full of oneself and arrogant.  Now I am coming to see the way the ego operates, it is the internal hater, the perpetrator trying to keep me small, afraid, and above all: imprisoned.

But the truth is, the ego is akin to the boogeyman, and it can't hurt us if we don't believe what it says to be true.  And if it's not a kind and loving thought, chances are, it's coming from the ego.  The ego cant hurt us if we live in the principal of perservering and never giving up.

Perseverance takes courage because it is the shedding and letting go of perfection. It is having the guts to walk through the mile high and mile wide but paper thin cloud of fear and into the light of our purpose.

In building A*LIGHT, I have experienced (as we all have) ups and downs. But deeper than the ups and downs, flows the lifeblood of perserverance.   We learn to keep going when it doesn't always feel good, to keep going through the laughter, through the tears, to keep going when no one is watching and when all eyes are on us, to keep going when the mind says no when the mind says I can't do it.  Because you can do it and a dream is inside of us to become a reality.  It is there to manifest.  Road blocks and difficulties are not set backs, they are set ups to teach us lessons to grow completely into who were are, and show up fully for the dream.

I have a friend who ran the twenty six mile LA marathon from Downtown LA to the beach.  She shared with me that as she was rounding out the last several miles one word continued to run through her mind:
YES.  She just kept saying to herself over and over again, YES YES YES.

This week, to all of you out there in the first month of  2014, I wish for you, and for us all, to feel the flow of the divine, like the wind in our sails, to press forward, go deeper, further, into our dreams, our purpose, our destinies-however they may reveal themselves in their own unique way. And no matter what the terrain may look like, or what storms or blue skies are ahead, to know deep in our belly and in our heart: Yes, I can do this!and Yes, I will never give up!

Ellen Etten and Ripley Rader became partners in crime their third day at NYU, when they realized the other was just the right amount of crazy. Best friends since, they have always been fans of one another and shared a passion for creating quality work for women in the entertainment industry. This passion led to the formation of their production company, Red Tent Entertainment, which is dedicated to producing female-driven content. Though both are also big fans of men in general, they believe in the need and power of quality female characters in the entertainment business.Their first project, the digital series "LA'd", was hosted by the popular website hellogiggles.com and won Best Webseries at the Hollywood & Vine Film Festival. Their second project, "A Little Too Close with Ellen Etten" is currently on Felicity Huffman's website,whattheflicka.com. Both projects were written, directed, and produced by women.  Another Installment of "A Little Too Close" is coming out late January.  In this installment Ellen hits the streets to talk to talk to perfect strangers about some of life's bigger issues- primarily love, marriage, and everything in between. They look forward to working with many talented men and women in the future, and are currently in development with a number of projects ranging from the web to the big screen.

The Altar of the Heart

I'm resting in bed at 1:34 on a Thursday afternoon and not batting a 1000, as they say.

My head tells me, what are you doing? You have to check email, call everyone back, finish the to do list-this, that, then all the other things you were supposed to do.
But then I remember to pause, take a moment and listen to my heart.  It says:
it's alright darlin, rest a bit, be gentle.  It's okay to recharge.  I love you.

Several years ago a friend told me about the Institute of HeartMath, wherein a group of scientists conducted studies to show the power of the mind versus the power of the heart.

Their research suggests that the heart's intuitive intelligence elevates communication, decisions, and choices to a much higher level of effectiveness than the mind.

They discovered that as hard as the mind can think and rationalize, the electro magnetic component of the heart is approximately 5000 times stronger than the brain's magnetic field and can be detected several feet away from the body with sensitive magnetometers.

This scientific data has made a great impact on my life.

Why?  Because it proves that the heart is a much more powerful navigational system than the mind.  It proves that when we get quiet and pause and take a moment to connect, the answers are inside of the heart space and waiting for us to come to the center of ourselves and come home.  I call this coming home "the altar of the heart."

When we look at some of the greatest leaders of our time: the Dalai Lama, Nelson Mandela, Mother Teresa, Aung San Suu Kyi,  Martin Luther King Jr, Pope Francis, Gandhi: One thing they all have in common is unconditional love-a love without strings, a love that elicits courage.  This love, this energy, this power cannot be cultivated in logic, reason, and calculation.  It is a state of feeling, being, knowing that emanates from the heart center.  Their power was not wielded through force or through fear.  They did not seek to dominate or conquer as the mind and the ego does.  No, their power radiates through their hearts. In turn,  they help others remember their own heart, their own inner knowing, their own triumphant state of being.

We all listen to that voice inside of us at times: the one that compulsively creates lists, the task master, the bully.  This voice manifests differently in all of us, but we all know what it sounds like.  And most likely, it is not a friendly, all-loving voice.
Being a small business owner, I catch myself listening to what I call the adding machine voice.  Yes, of course it's important to be financially savvy and aware of my cash flow, but there is a time and place for it.  The time I have designated is Friday, where I take stock of my company's finances and handle invoicing and billing.  This is where the adding machine mind can add away.

The adding machine mind doesn't do me any good when I'm sitting at a red light or walking my dog. For me listening to the adding machine mind is the equivalent of listening to death metal music.  (No offense all you Slayer and Slipknot fans out there.)
It makes living inside my mind unpleasant.  So when it comes up, I say
hello there you are again-without judgement-because to judge is to still be in the grip of the ego.  Instead I say, there you are again. And I return to this moment.  I like to think of this as a game, or a dance we get to practice over and over and over again all throughout the day.

I feel this is why we call it a "spiritual practice," because it's not about arriving anywhere in particular. It is all about the attempt and the willingness to practice.

A powerful approach to return to this moment is by asking hey heart how are you? Sounds a little out there, I know.  But how out there is it to listen to a bully inside your mind all day?   When I ask my heart how are you? most often I feel it reply
I'm happy we are safe. This is an exciting new time! Trust that it's okay. Trust.
When I listen to my head, I don't get those kind of answers.  I get more problems to solve, more agenda items to figure out.
We can all, at any moment in the day, take one minute to place our hands on our hearts and check in.  We can literally ask our heart, our inner knowing:

Can you be with me?
Can you show me how to be with you?
What would you have me do?
Where would you have me go?
What would you have me say, and to whom?

I have learned these techniques from friends, from Mastin Kipp's courses on
Entering the Heart, and also from a book I am currently reading:
The Course in Miracles.  It's beautiful to see the overlap and how all of these various teachings continue to lead us back home, back to the altar of the heart.

There is a great story I once heard.  A grandfather says to his grandson "There are two wolves inside of everybody."  And the little boy, wide-eyed, says "Well grandpa, which one wins?" "Well," says the grandpa, "It's simple-the one that you feed."

We have both voices of the heart and the mind running through our being and it is our choice to decide which one we listen to.  At any moment our hearts are here to guide us to our deepest truths and purpose.  We have the answers, we have the guide, all we need to do is to choose to listen to it.  And this is perhaps one of the greatest choices we as humans can make.

May we all continue to enjoy our weekend and take one little moment today to connect to our hearts.  It can't hurt and chances are, we might be surprised at what it has to say.

A Little Dog Named Patience

Recently, my neighbor asked me to babysit his little dog named Patience.  I agreed, but must admit wasn't too thrilled at first as Patience requires a lot of just that, patience.  When I call her she comes... sometimes.  Other times, she will give me a long, hard look and then turn around and walk in the opposite direction.
My friend calls her a little goat because she rifles through the trash and munches on paper or chocolate wrappers.  One morning I awoke to find that Patience had peed on my yoga mat.  It's kind of a joke around the house to hear throughout the day: Patience... Patience... PATIENCE!!!

In spite of all of these events, something rather remarkable has happened: I have fallen love with Patience.  Big time.  She's got the keys to my kingdom.  I'm starting to adore her tricks, her ways, and have begun to accept her for the wild sassy part-goat, part-furry dreadlock pony that she is.

I left the front door to my house open the other day so Patience and my dog Zoey could wander inside while I was outside watering the plants. Instead of going in the house with Zoey, Patience laid down outside while I watered.   When I finished, she looked up at me, and I realized she was waiting for me.  Patiently.  She stood up, wagged her tail, walked right by my side, and together we strolled into the house.

What I am learning from this little dog is to let go of control.  Patience is teaching me that when I chill out and relax, everything comes around in its own way and time.  There is no need for force.  There is no need to maneuver, push and shove.  I am learning to surrender the outcome to the highest good for all involved.

There is a poignant quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson that has stayed with me for years: Adopt the pace of nature; her secret is patience.

What a beautiful and vital principle!  In this world where we want it NOW, at the push of a button, in the texting, mapquesting, "just google it" era, to walk with the principle of patience is nothing short of miraculous.

A friend interrupted me once when I was going on (and on) about something in my life not happening fast enough.  She said,
"Imagine you are this beautiful rose that hasn't quite bloomed. Now, imagine screaming at that rose, 'Why don't you grow faster?  Why haven't you already bloomed?? What is wrong with you?!'."

This story makes me smile when I am taking my life really seriously thinking when is IT (oh, the proverbial IT) going to happen???

More and more I see the Earth as this academy where we all have been given a curriculum (our life) , and in our curriculum each of us has lessons to learn.  One big lesson in my curriculum is patience.  I see this theme emerge over and again in work, in relationships, in the cultivating of a spiritual practice.  I'm learning it is actually okay to stumble, to not do it perfectly, to make mistakes, that this is indeed a part of the process, the maturing, ripening likes grapes on the vine.

I love my life.  It is full of creativity, magic, and beauty.
I am single and have not been in a relationship in quite some time and mostly I am grateful for this.  Grateful, because I'm really learning who I am and the kind of woman that I want to continue to become.  But to be honest, every now and again, doubt creeps in and I think, Universe have you forgotten about me?  Will there be love again?

Recently, in Los Feliz, my quaint funky neighborhood just east of Hollywood, I was out and about running errands.  I spotted a dry cleaners I'd never been to.  There was an open parking spot so I snagged it.  As I was walking in, on the side walk written out in golden sparkly graffiti were the words: You Will Love Again

This past Sunday I was in the same neighborhood.  I passed by the bookstore, the cozy French cafe, a newstand, and I looked down and there it was again, the same golden graffiti like an older sister reassuring me: You Will Love Again.

Patience is a principle that teaches us to trust in oursevles and the world in which we live.   It reassures us that all good things happen in time and are indeed worth waiting for.  It reminds us to relax, to be gentle, to smile.  In the words of Frank Sinatra, "The Best is yet to come...
and babe won't it be fine."

Beyond Perfectionism

Since I was a little girl I have wanted to write music and sing.
Jem, the 80's pink-haired rockstar, barbie-esque cartoon was one of my heroes. My mom would spray paint Heather (my childhood best friend) and my hair hot pink with washable dye (all my girls raised in the 80's know what I'm talking about!) and Heather and I would sing and dance on top of the dining room table.

I adored Tiffany, Paula Abdul, and (most of all) Madonna.  Adored her.  As a third grader, I would rock the side ponytail, eye shadow on one eye, and huge star earrings.  Oh the 80's...  I was in a singing group with my friends in first grade called the Triple A's, and we wrote songs and performed dance routines.  Yes, life was good and I was destined to be a rockstar.

This has always been a (not so secret anymore) dream of mine.

So you can imagine my disapointment when my fourth grade choir teacher told me I wasn't in pitch while auditioning for the choir.  I got the message ~not good enough~ and from this one tiny comment, I put this dream into the realm of silliness, of fantasy, or thought maybe I would just come back as a musician in another life.

The last couple of years, the desire to sing and write songs has resurfaced and I'm not sure what to do with it or what it means.  But I do realize, that all of these years I mistook not being perfect with don't bother even trying.  I thought it was a joke, a pipe dream, and that I should basically lock away my desire to sing and write songs.

However, that's not true.  If there is a love put in our hearts, a dream, it is not up to us to decide how good it is or what it is worth.  It is not up to us to be perfect.  Because beyond perfectionism lies the doorway to our greatness. In order to be great, we have to be willing to be good, and be willing to be just okay, and even be willing to suck.

What holds me back in life is perfectionism.  When I listen to that voice, nothing is ever-and I mean ever-good enough.  So why try, why even attempt it if I won't measure up?  What's the point?  Any of this sound familiar?

A recent realization is that perfectionism and procrastination work hand in hand.  The "I'll never be good enough" voice prompts the procrastination to say, "try it tomorrow... do it later, later, later..." until we postpone our dreams, deepest longings, and heart's desires to another time.  When?  The time is now!  What else do we have??

Last year, a friend and very talented musician, Anthea, sold me this beautiful instrument called a harmonium.  For over a year now, I have contemplated putting my songs to music, but to do this I need to learn the harmonium instead of allowing it to collect dust.  I've considered it, and then thought, I'm too busy starting a company. I'll do it later... always later.  Well I'm done doing it later!  I've reached out to a few teachers and am signing up for lessons.  I'm going to commit to doing it, and to writing songs and singing, because if not now, when?

The only thing stopping me is me.  I'm done putting the brakes on and saying, "there isn't enough time," because the truth is, that there is always enough time to follow our dreams, to listen to our truth, and to express our heart.

What is it that you want to do if you didn't have to be perfect?  Maybe it's designing clothes, or being a pilot, or working with exotic animals, or traveling to Thailand, or being a mother, or writing poetry, or going back to school. Whatever it is, we all have dreams inside that our hearts wait for us to believe in.  Wait for us to listen, wait for us to just go for it.

Who cares if you suck, if nobody listens, if it doesn't change the world?  It will change you.  When you change, the world indeed changes for the better.  No more sitting on the sidelines saying, "one day."  The time is now.  We truly have nothing to lose but our fear.  We can go beyond perfectionism and come home to our truth.

A Letter From Martha Graham

There is a vitality,

a life force,
a quickening
that is translated through you into action,
and because there is only one of you in all time,
this expression is unique.
And If you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and be lost.
The world will not have it. It is not your business to determine
how good it is
nor how valuable it is
nor how it compares with other expressions.
It is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly
to keep the channel open.
You do not even have to believe in yourself or your work.
You have to keep open and aware directly to the urges that motivate YOU.
Keep the channel open...
No artist is pleased...
There is no satisfaction whatever at anytime
There is only a queer, divine dissatisfaction
a blessed unrest that keeps us marching
and makes "us" MORE alive than the others.
